Learning and Development team lands award – and new contracts
Acorn’s Learning and Development Division is celebrating after winning the Newport Construction Initiative’s 2008 ‘Investment in Skills Award’ – and two new contracts at the same time.
The team of Ann Nicholas, Richard Bassett, David Hill, Vanessa Hope, Marion Mason, Terry Hills and Kelly Smith delivered health and safety training to prepare delegates for CSCS tests which they needed to pass before they are able to work on construction sites. A series of one-day courses were held in locations around Newport, including community centres, fire stations and social clubs.
Initially, Newport Construction Initiative had arranged for the candidates to sit a CSCS test at a mobile test centre but it was soon realised that Acorn could offer a faster and more streamlined service by providing accredited CSCS test centres themselves. The company was assessed and staff based at both its Eastwood Park Training Centre in Bristol and its head office in South Wales were trained as invigilators.
When delegates passed their CSCS tests their details were also passed to Acorn’s construction recruitment division giving them further opportunities of securing employment.
The first contract was so successful that the Newport Construction Initiative applied for further funding, which has resulted in Acorn receiving two additional contracts.
