Acorn Director joins Commonwealth Games Council

The Commonwealth Games Council for Wales has appointed a Director of one of the UK's leading recruitment and training businesses to drive its commercial and sponsorship development in the run-up to next year’s tournament in India.

Dan Langford, Group Marketing Director at Acorn has been made Commercial Director of the sporting organisation responsible for the Wales team at the Delhi Games in October 2010.

In his new non-executive role Mr Langford will be influential in developing commercial and sponsorship partnerships, as well as leading the PR / media liaison, marketing and brand development for Team Wales as it prepares for next year’s tournament and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Mr Langford will work alongside six other board members that make up the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales.

He said: “It’s a real privilege to be appointed to this role. The Commonwealth Games is the only multi-sport event that Wales competes in as a nation and provides unique and valuable opportunities for every commercial partner that comes on board.

“The notion of Team Wales does not just refer to our athletes but, importantly, it also engages businesses and organisations looking to leverage the potential of an association with our national team – providing support for our elite sportsmen and women to compete on the international stage.

“I’m looking forward to working with all our partners across business, the media and sport as together we provide the best possible conditions for a successful and winning Team Wales.”

The 2010 Commonwealth Games is being staged in Delhi from October 3-14, when Wales will compete with a team made up of almost 150 athletes across 17 different sports. Team Wales will be looking to build on the very successful 2006 Games in Melbourne where the nation won 19 medals, as well as the Youth Games in the Indian city of Pune last year where Wales finished 6th in the medals table.

Helen Phillips, Deputy Chair of CGCW said, "Dan’s commercial experience and dynamic approach is a perfect fit with the ambitions of Team Wales. Our athletes come first, and a strategy to engage the support of businesses with an association to Wales, the media and the general public will only build upon the service we can provide to these athletes and encourage their best performances. Dan is well-respected by the business community and complements a highly-experienced board.”
