Chris jets to Spain after being the toast of colleagues
Electronics factory workers Chris Williams is celebrating a luxury Spanish holiday – and an extra five days’ off work - after colleagues name him the top employee at fast-growing Swansea company Trojan Electronics.
Chris, aged 19, of Mayhill, Swansea, has been named the inaugural Employees’ Employer of The Year at the five-year-old Gorseinon company, which already employs more than 40 staff and turns over almost £1.5m-a-year.
MD and company founder Clive Murphy awarded the prize of an extra five days’ holiday, on top of the 20 days already enjoyed by Chris, together with the Spanish villa. “Our workforce has been tremendous since we started the business; and we thought the award was also a great way of getting everyone involved,” said Mr Murphy.
Chris is among a number of staff recruited on a part or full-time basis from the Swansea office of Acorn, Wales’s largest recruitment and training company. “Chris is one of many great people we have employed; and with Acorn’s help we’re looking for more, particularly in the area of TV and LCD repairs,” said Mr Murphy.
As well as electronics manufacturing, Trojan specialises in refurbishing and recycling IT and all electronics equipment for many large national companies at its factories in Gorseinon.
“New environmental directives are placing greater emphasis on manufacturers and retailers to refurbish and recycle, and many turn to us as a provider of specialist skills,” said Mr Murphy.
He added, "With the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, very soon manufacturers, suppliers and retailers of IT equipment will have no other choice but to recycle their products. We have a huge amount of business ahead of us and we expect to reach a turnover of £2.5m by next year.”
The company was also named among Wales’s 50 fastest growing companies for the second year running. Indeed, another worker, David Williams, aged 49, of Pontardulais, came so close in the employee voting that he was rewarded for his second place with a stay at the luxury Celtic Manor Resort and a place at the prestigious dinner to celebrate Trojan’s achievement as a fast-growing business.
Julia Price, Manager of Acorn’s Swansea branch, said, “Trojan is a fantastic company to work for and we have built up a very strong relationship. We expect to see the business going from strength-to-strength in 2007 and will be working alongside Clive Murphy to help source further workers for the company, who will benefit from a great environment and excellent training.”
