10 Top ways to be Happy at Work

One of Britain’s fastest growing recruitment and training companies is embarking on a search to find out what makes us happy at work.

Acorn’s research demonstrates that Britain’s 1.2 million temporary workers are at their best working in a ‘comfortable environment – but it is undertaking a major survey to find if this is true.

Acorn’s experts say they believe comfortable working conditions are on a par equal pay and reward in the company’s league table of the Top 10 ways to make workers happy.

Acorn’s search coincides with National Temporary Workers’ Week, an annual event run by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation which, runs between June 4 and 8.

With turnover in temporary recruitment £21.6 billion last year and 1.2 million temporary workers going on assignment in a typical week, the recruitment industry plays a pivotal role in the success of the UK economy.

Acorn’s Top 10 must-haves for keeping yourself in your work are:

  1. Comfortable environment – make sure your employer does everything to make your surroundings great.
  2. Learn to communicate – It is important that you’re in a job where you can talk to people (especially your manager), to share your thoughts, information, concerns and successes.
  3. Have a positive attitude - focus on the things you do well and the positive responses you get from people you’ve helped, served or supplied
  4. Continue to develop – look for meaningful personal and professional development with a well-defined career path.
  5. Prioritise - One of the most serious causes of work unhappiness and stress is failing to meet commitments.
  6. Ask for feedback - t is important that your employer values its employees and treats you with fairness.
  7. Make team-work count - Working together will encourage fresh perspectives that can help to keep yourself interested and interesting.
  8. Challenge yourself - make sure you’re not bored with your role.
  9. Have fun - just because work is serious business doesn’t mean you can’t have fun while you do it.
  10. If all else fails, move on - If you’ve tried everything you can to be happy in your work and you still aren’t, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your employer, your job or your career.

Acorn’s Happy at Work day takes place on Friday, June 8, when it will ask people to email in their reasons for being happy at work.
