Acorn and the NSPCC

Acorn, one of the UK’s leading recruitment and training companies, is the NSPCC’s first Corporate Patron in Wales, pledging £100,000 or more to the charity.

Within the first four years of the pledge, Acorn has raised just over £48,000.  This was donated to the FULL STOP Appeal to deliver the NSPCC’s activities to end cruelty to children.  As this Appeal has come to an end, Acorn is now focusing its charitable efforts on backing the NSPCC’s Child Voice Appeal, a campaign to help expand and develop the charity’s helplines.

ChildLine is a service provided by the NSPCC and is the UK’s free, 24-hour confidential helpline for children and young people who need to talk.  Every day, thousands of children and young people call ChildLine about a problem they face.  Hundreds of caring adults call the NSPCC Helpline, worried about a child’s safety.  The support and advice they receive calms fears, solves problems – and even saves lives.

Sadly, a third of calls to ChildLine and a quarter of calls to the NSPCC Helpline go unanswered.

Child abuse is very much a local issue and something that has an impact on all communities, therefore the need for funds is as critical as ever. Over the last financial year (1 April 2008 – 31 March 2009) the NSPCC Helpline received more than 73,000 calls from people across the UK. Their ChildLine centres across the UK answered more than 1 million calls from children and young people in need of help or advice throughout the same period. The most common issues children called ChildLine about were - bullying, family relationship issues (including parental divorce or separation) and emotional and physical health.

Acorn staff have enjoyed a long history of supporting charity and community initiatives and are looking forward to supporting NSPCC in the coming years.

Funds raised by Acorn will  help to ensure that

  • when a child plucks up the courage to ask someone for help, there is someone there to answer their call
  • trained practitioners are able to deliver support through the NSPCC helpline
  • the NSPCC continues to recruit and train ChildLine volunteer counsellors
  • the NSPCC continues to pay for the freephone call costs so that children can continue to acess ChildLine for free.

For more information on becoming a NSPCC Corporate Patron or if your company or organisation would like to make a donation to the NSPCC, please call 029 2026 7008 or visit www.nspcc.org.uk.
