Less than 12 months ago Mike was a successful Key Account Manager, however everything changed in March 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Mike took a chance on a complete career change, and has since found his vocation in life. Read about his experiences here.
Prior to March 2020, I was working as a very successful Key Account Manager within thermoforming. With 32 years in the sales industry, I was extremely passionate about my career always hitting and exceeding my targets, however it all changed in March as I suddenly found myself out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a divorced dad of two beautiful children, and living with my fiancé, I knew I had to act straight away to keep up with my living costs of simply running my home.
I knew many of the hospitals were looking for support workers such as cleaners, porters and catering staff, so I applied for some of these roles immediately through a number of recruitment agencies, however I only heard back from Acorn.
Every person I spoke to at Acorn was professional, organised in extremely difficult times, and offered a lot of hands-on support to get my process completed.
I met Catherine Evans from Acorn at my initial induction and was immediately impressed with her professionalism, energy and enthusiasm – especially at such a difficult time.
She responded to all my queries during all times of the day and night and she really made me feel valued, which was so gratefully received after just losing my job.
I felt supported and simply ‘cared-for’ throughout the whole recruitment process with Acorn.
Within days of hearing from Acorn, I was successfully placed, inducted and trained as a ‘Floater’ for a local hospital. A Floater is someone who is trained to carry out either domestic or catering duties in a variety of wards depending on their needs, which is essential to support the hospital to run as smoothly as possible, especially when under such extreme pressure. I am still working there now and I absolutely love it.
Not only did this opportunity help me continue to pay my bills, but I have actually discovered a vocation and a new career that I want to focus on for the future. The role is so rewarding. I go home every day knowing I've really made a difference, which gives me a huge sense of pride and appreciation.
I will never forget what Acorn did for me. As a company who truly is 'all about the people', you gave me the support and encouragement when I needed it most, and I will always be grateful.
