Job Description

We are currently looking for an experienced Finance Manager to join our client. You will ensure the efficient and effective performance of the Finance Function and the smooth functioning of the General Ledger.

Responsibilities of the job (not limited to)

  • Manage the Accounting function within the business and ensure all activities are consistent with business policy
  • Accountable for maintaining and ensuring the accuracy of the General Ledger and that any accounting transactions are consistent with UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practise (GAAP).
  • Fully empowered representative for finance at Tender-Vet & Bid / No-Bid Meetings
  • Interface between the Government Banking Service (GBS) & DECA
  • Provide management information for internal and external customers, including monthly Finance Packs and quarterly Board packs
  • Manage the yearly KPI audit undertaken by the Defence Internal Audit to ensure completion.

Managing others

  • Building the team through selecting and training the right people and developing their skills through providing opportunity and experience as appropriate to the person
  • Developing team communication systems; holding regular and effective team and individual meetings to support two way communication, coach, develop and share information and knowledge
  • Setting performance standards for everyone in the team aligned to business plans, goals and required behavioural standards and levels of competence; continuously monitoring, discussing and appraising performance
  • Raise productivity through the performance of the team - motivating, coaching, developing, supporting and dealing with under performance issues
  • Conduct recruitment activity; interviews and select candidates and induct new joiners
  • Handle conflict within the team; Counsel and advise employees as needed
  • Harmonise conflicting objectives and organisational issues concerning the team, seeking to communicate and resolve
  • Designs jobs and creates job descriptions, regularly reviewing against business needs and supporting or deigning new organisation / team structures; establish reporting lines
  • Create conditions for change and encourage the team to adopt change whilst appreciating the change challenges that individuals may experience
  • Strive to improve the quality of working life of the team through fair consideration of individual needs balanced with business requirements
  • Sense and adopt the appropriate management style required by the situation.

Communication demands of the job

  • You will be required to communicate with all departments within the business and at all levels.
  • You will also be required to liaise with Auditors, including the NAO and DIA, providing them with the information and assistance required for them to complete their audits on time and in full.

Knowledge and skills

  • To have a thorough and practical understanding of UKGAAP, FRS and IFRS including the ability to interpret and apply this knowledge to meet the requirements of the Executive Agency to the satisfaction of the National Audit Office.
  • Advanced user in a range of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Advanced report writing skills to present business cases and results to Board level
  • Able to interpret current and new legislation and standards
  • Highly developed IT skills in Excel (i.e., able to design and manipulate spreadsheets using complex formulae, linking multiple spreadsheets / worksheets, pivot tables, v look up tables, macros) with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
