What legitimate Recruiters will never ask you to do
If you’re job hunting, you’ve probably come across recruiters offering you exciting opportunities. But with scams on the rise, it’s more important than ever to know the difference between genuine recruiters and fraudsters pretending to be them.
At Acorn by Synergie, we’re committed to ethical, transparent recruitment. So here’s a quick guide to help you stay safe - and spot the warning signs.
1. We will never ask you to pay a fee
A genuine recruiter will never ask you to pay to apply for a job, attend an interview, or be put forward for a role. If someone is demanding money in exchange for a “guaranteed job” or “training required,” it’s a scam.
Red flag: Any mention of application fees, admin charges, or “training” costs up front.
2. We’ll never ask for personal info too soon
While you’ll eventually need to provide details like your right to work, legitimate recruiters won’t ask for your National Insurance number, bank details, or a copy of your passport during an initial conversation or application.
Red flag: Being asked to share sensitive information early, especially over email or social media.
3. There will never be any pressure to make a quick decision
Professional recruiters want what’s right for you - not to rush you into a role that might not suit. If someone is pressuring you to sign something quickly or accept a job without giving you time to consider, proceed with caution.
Red flag: Urgent messages pushing you to commit “now or never.”
4. Formal communication will be sent via professional channels
While recruiters might connect with you via LinkedIn or text/WhatsApp messages initially, all serious discussions about roles, interviews, and contracts should happen via professional channels such as phone and email.
Red flag: Someone offering a job via Telegram, WhatsApp, or Facebook Messenger without verifying their identity.
5. We would try to give you as much information as possible about the company and role
A trustworthy recruiter will be transparent about the job title, location, responsibilities, and employer. If they’re evasive or keep things “confidential” until you give them something in return, that’s a sign to back away.
Red flag: Lack of clear information or refusal to share company details.
